What is Content Management?


Content management has been around for as long as man has had a need to put some sort of order in his life, but in this Internet Age the concept has become synonymous with the processes of building and maintaining web sites, processes that have become so complex entire systems have sprung up to manage them.




What is “Content”?

“Content” can be lots of things. It can be words in the form of advertising copy or documents, it can be photos and videos and it can be animation and audio. In a more practical mode, “content”, in all those forms, is information provided to an audience that needs it. Doing that effectively needs content management.

What is “Content Management”?

“Content Management” therefore, becomes the procedure for funneling information to that audience in a meaningful, relevant and up-to-date manner. In its most elementary form, a web site can be built with a word processor and an understanding of HTML, but such sites are rare.
Today, web sites are collaborative efforts involving writers, designers, web- masters, all of which are required to sustain a workflow that keeps their site relevant.

What are “Systems”?

The need for procedures to handle that workflow has resulted in both commercially available and open source applications called “systems.” Among the benefits of these Content Management Systems are the ease and speed which content can be updated and kept timely. The processes often packaged within a system are designed to efficiently automate various functions within the site such as databases, forms and e-mail procedures.

Since the Web has become the pervasive avenue for information dispersal, perhaps the best benefit of a CMS is its ability to accept information from diverse sources and keep it efficiently current.
