What Is The Difference Between Software Tools & Software Packages?

For those of us who aren’t the most computer savvy it may seem like there are many definitions that are difficult to differentiate. Software comes in a variety of different forms that can be on the macro, or micro level. The programs we use everyday like internet browsers, writing programs, and music players are part of the group known as software packages. A package contains many different components that work together to create an entire system that operates as a whole. Though each individual component may not be used at the same time, each plays its own part in the “big” picture.

As mentioned before it is a collection of many different components that work together to offer a functional service. Without any of the smaller components which are known as “software tools” it would be either impossible or difficult to get the broad service offered by a software package. The difference between software tools & software packages should not be confused as one is an integral part of the other. Consider the package form as a pizza which is made of the tools (ingredients).

Definition Of A Software Tool

A tool is a single component of a software package that adds to the overall functionality of a program. Consider a word processor which most people use fairly regularly. The entire program is the “package”, while something like the word count would be considered a “tool”. Many programs can be enhanced a later times by adding specific software tools. For example a word processor could later be enhanced by installing a tool that allows you to manipulate pictures more efficiently within the program. The difference between software tools & software packages should not be confused.
